For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to pick up needlecraft as a hobby. I took a sewing class a couple of years back but found handling small needles and a sewing machine too troublesome.
I don’t remember what exactly prompted me to try crocheting, I think I may have stumbled upon a YouTube video and thought it was worth a try. Anyway, late last year, I went to the nearest Daiso store and bought my first crochet hook and yarn and started practising easy crochet stitches over and over again.
Once I felt a bit more comfortable handling the hook and yarn, I researched for the easiest crochet project tutorial I could find on YouTube. My first crochet project was a shawl guided by Bhooked’s YouTube video.
It took a few weeks for me to finish the shawl but I was pretty happy with the outcome despite the stitches being either too loose or tight. My second project was a headband that I made for my three-year-old daughter. My third was a baby blanket which took almost a month to complete.
The Joy of Crocheting
Three months into crocheting I’ve found it to be an activity that has brought me great joy, especially when I’ve finished a crochet project. What I love so far about crocheting is that I find it to be a relaxing activity and really look forward to picking up my hook and yarn after a long day at work.
I’ve also found crocheting to be very therapeutic. I am usually overcome with stress and anxiety at the end of the day but the repetitive motions of creating a crochet project has had a very calming and relaxing effect on me.
The patterns I’ve chosen for my first three projects have been pretty simple and can be done almost mindlessly. I’m able to crochet while I spend time with the family, listen to an audiobook and even watch my favourite shows on TV, which is an absolute plus point!
My New Passion Project
I told myself that if I can complete at least three projects and enjoyed the process, I would take up crocheting as my new hobby. Well, I finished three projects and I’m glad to say that not only did I enjoyed the process, I absolutely loved it! It is, therefore, my newfound hobby.
Learning to crochet is my passion project for 2020. I hope to share whatever I’ve learned in the process through this blog as a beginner.
