In 2019, I used a Hobonichi Weeks as my everyday carry (EDC) planner. Late last year, however, I started a job that practices an agile work environment. Essentially, that means you can work from wherever you choose. It also means that there is no assigned work desk in the office and you pick a different hot desk to work on every day.
Like most agile work environment, each employee is given a locker to stash valuables. It’s not encouraged to leave valuables on the hot desks since no drawers are provided and the open system means that you have to be careful not to leave your valuables out in the open.
I move around constantly for meetings and discussions which meant that I had to keep my EDC practical. The Hobonichi Weeks while slim was not really practical to lug around with me everywhere and on top of that, I also have to find ways to carry some cash, name cards and other work essentials like my laptop with me at all times.
For 2020, I decided not to spend money buying myself a Hobonichi planner and/or any of its accessories (this is really so hard to do cause the 2020 editions are so nice!). I decided to go back to my very neglected passport-sized traveler’s notebook.
There are many types and brands of travelers notebooks out in the market but I have been collecting travelers notebooks from The Travelers Company for the past couple of years. A travelers notebook offers a very flexible planner system allowing me to set it up the way I want.
My 2020 Travelers Notebook EDC Setup
This is my 2020 EDC setup using my camel coloured passport sized travelers notebook from The Travelers Company:
Fourruof Travelers Notebook Fabric Insert
I bought this off from Etsy straight from Japan. This is a minimalist wallet insert. The fabric material is thin but has a nice stiffness to it that makes it feel sturdy enough to carry around without worrying too much about any wear and tear. I bought the blue and use it to keep cash, a credit card and also some name cards.
I use one 2020 diary insert where I record all the important dates for big events like holidays, birthdays etc. I paired this up with a grid notebook to jot down notes, ideas, random thoughts, quotes that I want to record.
I’m a big fan of grid notebooks. I’ve tried blank and lined notebooks before but the lines or the lack thereof never appealed to me.
Travelers Company Accessories
There are two 2020 limited edition accessories from the Travelers Company that I’ve included in my setup. I love the design and thought it would be a nice addition to my EDC.
I have the plastic sheet which I use as a bookmark in my planner. It can also be used as a ruler but realistically I rarely have a need for rulers when I write in my EDC. I do however use it more as a pencil board when I am writing.
I also purchased the limited edition clear folder which I intend to use to keep some of my mini vision boards.
I currently use a Muji pen which is latched onto the notebook using a camel coloured pen clip, also from the Travelers Company. Truth be told, I’m not too happy with the pen. I don’t feel comfortable writing with it but it will do for now while I search for the perfect EDC pen or mechanical pencil.
Simple and practical. That’s the set up I was going for my EDC in 2020. What do you think?
